Adult Opportunities

Sunday Morning opportunities begin at 10:15 a.m.

Adult Learning Hour for Lent

Beginning February 19th, Transfiguration Sunday, the adult Learning Hour will offer Sowing Tears, Reaping Joy: The Bible and Brahm’s Requiem. This study follows the famous “German Requiem” tour of Biblical prompts about death, grief, end of life, and faith for here and hereafter. Through music and Scripture, the study takes us from graveside grieving through the challenges of self-reflections to perspectives of eternity and hope beyond.

The class will begin at 10 am with listening to the music of Brahm’s Requiem, in 7 movements. At approximately 10:15, the Bible study and discussion will begin. The weekly topics include: Blessed Mourners, Fading Flowers, We Have to be Carefully Taught, A Glimpse of Glory, A Mother’s Comfort, Our Heart’s True Home and The Last Word.

The resource book cost is $13. Please register for the class in the Activity Center on Sunday morning through February 12th. The class will meet in the Choir Room and conclude on Palm Sunday. If you have questions, speak with Gretchen Hammeke.

The Wired Word Returns

Beginning February 19th, an old favorite returns to the Adult Learning Hour schedule. Chuck Voyles will facilitate The Wired Word, a class which features Biblical commentary and discussion questions related to a topic in the news that week. During the discussion, current events can be related to relevant Scripture passages with group discussion about how the verses apply to everyday life. The class will meet in Room A-112, which is in the Education wing adjacent to the Children’s Chapel.

Parenting Class Begins in March

Rachel Ward will teach The Bible’s Bad Parents for the Family Ministry class beginning March 4th in the Chapel. She will lead discussion about parenting examples from the Bible and how they apply to our families today. Using the stories of King David, Jacob, Mary and Joseph, the Prodigal Son and others, the class will look at what these stories tell us about parenting choices – good and bad.

“Final Words” Study Groups

Adam Hamilton’s newest book, entitled Final Words from the Cross, will be used during Lent for the Sunday morning sermons. In addition, a DVD and discussion guide on the book will be the focus of a number of weekday learning opportunities.

There will be at least three groups gathering in members’ homes, a group at Wesley Willows and a daytime group at the church. Sign up sheets for those groups will be available in the Activity Center this month, and the groups will begin meeting after Ash Wednesday and continue through Lent.

In addition, the Wednesday morning Men’s Bible Study group will also use this study and they are inviting the men of the church to join them at 6:30 am in room A112. Final Words from the Cross will also be studied in a small group through the Stateline Ministry with Pastor Brad Rogers. Watch the Sunday bulletin and listen for announcements during worship for the specific times and dates – or stop by the Final Words sign up table in the Activity Center on Sunday mornings.
